1. Experience. Always find out what lounges, clubs, private events, recording artists or corporate clients your DJ has spun for. You want to make sure your DJ is not a one-dimensional part-timer, but a true performer who has had varied and extensive experience performing in front of different and tough audiences.

2. Flexibility. Find out if they have any issues with your “must play” list or your “do not play” list. A skilled DJ who will customize the experience will gladly accept your lists, even if they’re a mile long, and build your night based on what you provided.

3. Personalization. You want to make sure the DJ creates a soundtrack for your event based on your style, taste and vision for the night. One size does NOT fit all, and if your desire is to have a mosh pit at your wedding, you need to hire a DJ that will deliver that or anything else you want.

4. Energy. Your DJ should know and understand how to read a crowd, build the energy and keep it up all night. Since you never want there to be a lull, your DJ should effortlessly blend all genres to keep guests on the dance floor all night long.

5. Skill. Mixing and blending songs is a true skill, and only professionals know how to do this seamlessly. In fact, when it’s done correctly you shouldn’t be aware of it! Make sure your DJ’s skills are up to par so there are no awkward silences between songs.

6. Equipment. DJ equipment is akin to musical instruments and you wouldn’t expect a band to talk in with no equipment, or half of what they need! So don’t accept a DJ that doesn’t have the necessary setup.

7. Back Up. Ask your DJ what is the procedure is should an emergency occur with him/her on your wedding day. Regardless of any valid emergencies, you need to make sure you will have a DJ rocking your wedding and entertaining guests. Disasters do happen, but make sure there’s a back up in place to ensure the show will go on.

8. Familiarity. It always helps to have a DJ with experience spinning the venue of your wedding. Regardless of experience, however, a true professional will prepare ahead of time and reach out to the venue, and familiarize themselves with noise ordinance regulations or strict requirements that require special attention.

9. Crowd Pleaser. There could be instances where your guests begin to request songs that conflict with your wants. What will your DJ do? How a DJ strikes a balance to deliver on your desires while satisfying the guests’ requests is a key piece of the puzzle to ensuring everyone has a good time.

10. Personality. Always meet with your DJ ahead of time to get a sense of their personality and style. No two weddings are alike! We believe you should have a DJ that is the complete package, with the proper experience and skill, but also fits your personality and style!

Guest Post | Most Excellent Mother/Son Dance Songs

I’m on vacation this week, so we are continuing with the guest posts. Yesterday Cris from Kiss My Tulle was here, sharing about father/daughter dance songs, and today she is back with some great ideas for the mother/son dance!

Kiss My Tulle is a website devoted to helping engaged couples create the wedding of their dreams on a manageable budget. Everything that Kiss My Tulle does is inspired by the mission to make it cheap, make it lovely, make it functional, and make it accessible. Kiss My Tulle is committed to providing its readers with do-able DIY projects, down-to-earth advice, and realistic Big Day expectations presented by editor, Cris Stone.

Thanks for being here Cris!

Debating what songs to use for those important moments at the reception, like the First Dance (I tackled it a bit here) and the Father/Daughter Dance (here’s a few of our ideas)? Trying to use familiar but not totally traditional songs? I love that idea and want to show you a few options for the Mother/Son Dance. After all, how many more times can anyone handle hearing that “I
Hope you Dance” song?

Jason Q. Tran via Style Me Pretty

My mind immediately started churning and thinking of other awesome and unusual Mother/Son dance songs. Here’s some that I came up with:

  • Billy Joel – Lullabye (Goodnight, My Angel): A sweet and soothing song all about sharing your hopes and dreams and love with your child.
  • Barbra Streisand – Jason’s Song (Nothing’s Gonna Harm You): Originally from the muscial “Sweeney Todd”, Babs sang it live to her baby boy Jason and moms everywhere nodded and cried.
  • Boys II Men – Song for Mama: Gorgeous, lush, and full vocals with a powerful lyric.
  • Dixie Chicks – Godspeed (Sweet Dreams): A lovely lullabye that is all boy and all joy.
  • Guns N Roses – Sweet Child O’ Mine: Does your mama like to rock? Then you’ve found your song (here’s a slightly calmer version from Sheryl Crow).
  • Smokey Robinson and the Miracles – Shop Around: Heeee! This is a tongue-in-cheek song for the mother/son duo that don’t want to take themselves too seriously.
  • Will Smith – Just the Two of Us: A good option for a single mom and her son.
  • James Taylor – Sweet Baby James: A fab choice if the groom’s name is any variation of James.
  • Willie Nelson – Mamas Don’t Let You Babies Grow Up To Be Cowboys: A fun and frisky song for moms and sons (though maybe not a good option if the groom is actually a cowboy…).

Just a Note: At several of the weddings that I have attended in the past couple of years, I’ve seen a really sweet little thing that I hope moves from a trend to a tradition. (As with the father/daughter dance.) During the Mother/Son dance, the first verse and chorus are danced as a solo for the Groom and the Mother of the Groom. Then the Master of Ceremonies opens the dance floor up to ALL mothers and sons to join in the dancing. This is a GREAT opportunity for fab photos and lasting memories – I would encourage you to give it a shot at your reception.

Grooms, do you know what song you’ll be dancing with your momma to? Are you going with any of the ones listed above? Why did you pick the one that you did? Share away!

Guest Post | Unique Daddy/Daughter Songs

Hey guys!! I am heading out of town this week to camp in the beautiful Grover Hot Springs, CA with my family. Tent camping is not everyone’s ideal vacation, but I adore it. I’m super excited to sit under the trees and read a book, to run around in the meadows with my niece and nephew, to hike up to the waterfalls with my happy pups, and to just be in nature for a few days! It’s good for the soul.

While I’m gone, I have a few lovely guest posters here to keep you entertained and inspired. First up, today and tomorrow is Cris, from Kiss My Tulle! Cris is a hilarious, spunky, down to earth blogger and if you don’t know and love her blog already, you should definitely check it out!

Take it away Cris!

Debating what song you want to have as your Daddy/Daughter dance (P.S. I am totally on board with the whole Daddy thing – my dad is from the South, where every girl calls her dad “Daddy”. If that icks you out then simply replace every mention of Daddy/Daughter with Father/Daughter. Okay? Okay.). Thinking of using a familiar but not totally traditional song? After all, how many more times can anyone handle hearing that stupid “Butterfly Kisses” song?

Sedona Bride via Style Me Pretty

My mind immediately strated churning and thinking of other awesome & unusual Daddy/Daughter dance songs. Here’s some that I came up with:

  • John McDermott – Daughter of Mine: An Irish folk song that was my friend Helen’s Daddy/Daughter dance song. The lyrics are sweet and the music is easy to dance to – a good choice for anyone who might need a slower tune due to a disability or illness.
  • Trace Adkins – Then They Do: I friggin’ adore this song – even non-country fans will enjoy it. Sung very intimately and simply by tough guy Trace Adkins, this song was written and recorded to reflect Trace’s own feelings about watching his pack of little girls grow up.
  • Ray Allaire - A Song for My Daughter: Okay, this is a little bit cheesy but it’s a GOOD cheesy that not that many people have heard. Great for a more traditional dad and daughter duo.
  • Jo Cunningham – My Daughter: A folksy little song sung by a dude who’s voice could be your dad’s.
  • Murray Gold (featuring the BBC National Orchestra of Wales) – I Offer You My Daughter: Fans of instrumental music (and Doctor Who!) will love this strings heavy song that’s perfect to waltz to.
  • Ray Charles – This Little Girl of Mine: It’s Ray and it’s awesome.
  • Paul Simon – Father and Daughter: Such a classic song for dads reflecting on their daughters. Paul’s simple lyrics and the music’s upbeat tone make this is a slightly livelier version of the traditional Daddy/Daughter dance.
  • Heartland – I Loved Her First: A straight up country song that is perfect for any dad having a little bit of a hard time letting go.

Just a Note: At several of the weddings that I have attended in the past couple of years, I’ve seen a really sweet little thing that I hope moves from a trend to a tradition. During the Daddy/Daughter dance, the first verse and chorus are danced as a solo for the Bride and the Father of the Bride. Then the Master of Ceremonies opens the dance floor up to ALL daddies and daughters to join
in the dancing. This is a GREAT opportunity for fab photos and lasting memories – I would encourage you to give it a shot at your reception.

Brides, do you know what song you’ll be dancing to? Are you going with any of the ones listed above? Why did you pick the one that you did? Share away!

Allie H - July 3, 2012 - 12:51 am

I’m still undecided – I’m thinking about the completely-inappropriate-and-non-traditional route. The first song I remember “singing” with my Dad when I was a kid was “Luckenbach” by Waylon Jennings. But “Then They Do” by Trace is a close 2nd for me. We’ll see…

Cris of Kiss My Tulle - July 3, 2012 - 2:38 pm

Thanks for having me, Colleen

And Allie, “Then They Do” was the song my dad and I danced to. I holds a special place in my heart.

First Dance Fridays | Country

In honor of the 4th of July coming up, today’s first dance songs are as all American as it gets – country! I’m not going to include a description for each of these because they would all be the same. They are sweet, sentimental, romantic, and perfect for country lovers.

By Cherry Photography via Koru Wedding Style

1) Only You Can Love Me This Way – Keith Urban

And you’re always in my heart
Always on my mind
When it all becomes too much
You’re never far behind

And there’s no one
That comes close to you
Could ever take your place
‘Cause only you can love me this way

2) It’s Your Love – Tim McGraw & Faith Hill

It’s your love
It just does something to me
It sends a shock right through me
I can’t get enough

And if you wonder
About the spell I’m under
Oh, it’s your love

3) You Had Me From Hello – Kenny Chesney

Well you had me from “Hello”, I felt love start to grow
The moment that I looked into your eyes, you won me
It was over from the start, you completely stole my heart
And now you won’t let go

I never even had a chance you know
You had me from “Hello”

4) Amazed – Lonestar

I don’t know how you do what you do
I’m so in love with you
It just keeps getting better
I want to spend the rest of my life,
with you by my side
Forever and ever
Every little thing that you do,
Baby I’m amazed by you

5) Bless The Broken Road – Rascal Flatts

I don’t know how you do what you do
I’m so in love with you
It just keeps getting better
I want to spend the rest of my life,
with you by my side
Forever and ever
Every little thing that you do,
Baby I’m amazed by you

These are all great songs!

Broken Road has always been one of my favorite songs. Ever since I first heard it on an episode of “Dawson’s Creek” way back when! Great picks!
