I’m (Kind Of) A Failure – But Let Me Distract You With This Cool Video

Remember last week when I told you all about the awesome new schedule for the blog? Well, we’re one week in and I’m already failing at it. But I did tell you that I don’t strictly keep schedules… they’re more like guidelines. In the way that moral codes of decency are more like guidelines for pirates. But I’m going to distract you with shiny objects so you hopefully won’t notice.

Shiny object #1 – I bought a keyboard today!!! One of the reasons why posting did not go according to plan. I’m super duper excited to learn to play again (I played piano as a kid, and if you didn’t know, I play the harp. Not all that well, but who’s judging?) So anyway, music is awesome! Oh you already knew I thought that? Oh ok. Moving right along then.

Shiny object #2 – This totally non-wedding related music video that will rock your socks off if you were a child anytime since the 1970′s – or even if you were a parent of a child in those years – so pretty much everyone! If Mr. Rogers was not a part of your childhood, you were sorely missing out. I now present him, autotuned and remixed into a beautiful and magical song about the power of the imagination.

Shiny object #3 – Just to prove I didn’t forget that I write a wedding blog. On the off chance that you haven’t already seen this video, get ready for one of the best proposals ever. And if you have seen it, who are you kidding? You know you want to watch it again.

I can’t embed it, so go watch it here.

P.S. Watching this video, and having no clue who/where these people were, I told myself, “This chick has got Portland written all over her” (I used to live there) and then I found out that’s where they live. I was pretty proud of myself.

Thanks for being here with me in my moments of weirdness. Regularly scheduled programming coming soon. The first dance Friday post is coming to a city near you within mere hours. Get excited. xo

sticking to a firm schedule is HARD. i never 100% succeed as it either. much prefer the “its more of a guideline” route :) also, yes, i will watch that proposal vid [AND CRY] again thanks. happy friday :)

Guest Post | My Wedding Playlist

I’m happy to have Aditi Jain guest posting today. Aditi is a freelance fashion writer, for companies like Sareez.com. She’s also studying Indian fashion design, including wedding sarees. Today Aditi is sharing about how to choose a wedding playlist, and how she chose hers. Thanks for being here Aditi!

Every bride spends countless hours planning her wedding day, making sure she creates the perfect bridal look, fills her venue full of eye-catching decorations, and designs a menu that leaves guests salivating. One important item that brides simply cannot overlook is the music. Creating a wedding playlist ensures that the music entertaining guests reflects the bride and groom’s interests and personality. Even more, a wedding playlist should include songs that have special meaning to the couple, their family, and even their friends.

I designed my wedding playlist by focusing on several categories: special dances, romantic songs, and party music. Discovering the right mix of songs that have meaning, encourage guests to get on the dance floor, and reflect the couple’s love is key. With the right playlist, wedding music can be both memorable and meaningful for the couple and guests.

Special Dances

Wedding receptions often begin with the couple sharing their first dance as husband and wife, followed by the bride and groom dancing with their parents. Choosing the right songs for these meaningful first dances sets the tone for the reception. Fortunately, there are plenty of touching songs suitable for these dances.

Etta James’ “At Last” celebrates the couple’s joy of finding their true, long-lasting love. The song’s lyrics–“At last, my love has come along. My lonely days are over, and life is like a song”–are ideal for a wedding day, particularly the couple’s first dance.

A more upbeat first dance song, the one my husband and I chose for our wedding, is Barry White’s “Can’t Get Enough of Your Love.” This fast-paced song is easy to dance to, and its lyrics, which include “Girl, if I could only make you see and make you understand. Girl, you love for me is all I need and more than I can stand,” is a festive way to express a couple’s love for each other. Plus, it gets the wedding guests tapping their feet and ready to dance.

The song that a bride dances to with her father should be one that describes their relationship, either what the relationship once was or what it has become now that the daughter is a wife. I chose The Temptations’ “My Girl,” one of those songs that fathers often sing to their little girls, telling them of how much their daughters mean to them. A more modern song with similarly touching lyrics is Bob Carlisle’s “Butterfly Kisses,” and the song even references a father’s feelings on his daughter’s wedding day: “She’ll change her name today. She’ll make a promise, and I’ll give her away.” “Unforgettable,” the aptly named duet by Nat King Cole and daughter Natalie, also works well for the father-daughter dance.

The groom has some choices when it comes to appropriate songs for his dance with his mother. A modern choice is “Mama’s Song” by Carrie Underwood, which includes the lyrics: “Mama, you taught me to do the right things. So now you have to let your baby fly.” Mikki Viereck’s “A Song for My Son” touches on a mother’s feelings about her son’s wedding day: “I don’t know where the time has gone since those little boy days. Doesn’t seem that long, yet here you are. It’s your wedding day.”

Romantic Songs

Weddings are all about love, and some slow songs during the reception allow the bride and groom, along with their guests, to enjoy a little romance on the dance floor. Plenty of romantic songs are suitable for a wedding playlist. Eric Clapton’s “Wonderful Tonight” effectively expresses how a groom feels about his bride’s beauty on their wedding day – and every day. Elvis Presley’s “Can’t Help Falling in Love” adequately describes the couple’s love: “Take my hand; take my whole life too. For I can’t help falling in love with you.” Rascal Flatts’ “Bless the Broken Road” celebrates couples who found each other no matter the path. Other wedding playlist songs that will create some romance include “Endless Love” by Diana Ross and Lionel Ritchie, “From This Moment” by Shania Twain, and “What a Wonderful World” by Louis Armstrong.

Party Music

Good dance music is a must to keep the reception moving and get guests on the dance floor. A mix of classic tunes and modern hits keeps all generations on their feet. A little Motown is a must on a wedding playlist: The Temptations’ “Ain’t Too Proud to Beg,” The O’Jays’ “Love Train,” KC and the Sunshine Band’s “Get Down Tonight,” and Barry White’s “My First, My Last, My Everything” get people moving. Include some modern dance songs to keep the young people dancing, like Rhianna’s “We Found Love,” anything by Lady Gaga, and Usher’s “DJ Got Us Fallin’ in Love.” For a hesitant-to-dance crowd, some group dances, such as the “Electric Slide” or “Cha Cha Slide” can encourage guests to get on the dance floor.

Creating a wedding playlist can reflect the couple’s personalities, while catering to guests’ interests as well. With a wealth of suitable songs out there, finding the perfect wedding playlist shouldn’t be a challenge.

Monday Moments | Who’s Got The Ring?

Happy Monday friends! Today’s edition of Monday Moments comes from this wedding that I featured, by B&E Photographs. I can only assume it was a practical joke, played on the poor unknowing best man. If you look closely, you can see the panic in his face as he searches his pockets for the ring while everyone watches on…

Then panic turns to relief and laughter when his neighboring groomsman reveals that he’s got the ring! Too funny. Although as a general rule I hate practical jokes so nobody better play them at my wedding!:P

Hahaha, that’s too funny! I love little unique things like this, at my friend’s wedding they all did a little dance down the aisle as the bridesmaids & groomsmen were leaving. It was adorable.

bree [capitolromance] - June 11, 2012 - 4:46 pm

omg i love this – great shots, great reactions. i’d probably DIE if this happened at my own wedding though! haha

Elizabeth | Bridal Musings - June 13, 2012 - 4:26 am

This is brilliant!! The poor fellow must’ve been panicking big time! I think I’d laugh if that happened at my wedding but you never know, I was filled with emotions during our ceremony ~ might have tipped me over the edge to a blubbering wreck ;)

First Dance Friday | My Favorites

Welcome to our first installment of First Dance Fridays!! I thought it would make sense to start with my top five favorite love songs! One of these could be the first dance song at my wedding, but that depends quite a bit on the groom!;)You can listen to these songs on Spotify here, or the links will take you to the song on YouTube.

1) At Last – Etta James

I realize this has been been played at thousands of weddings through the generations, but you guys… I just don’t care. It’s just the sweetest song ever, and it’s a classic for a reason. Especially for brides who have waited for a long time for the right man (ahem) the words are perfectly perfect.

“At last, my love has come along
My lonely days are over
And life is like a song

You smiled, you smiled
Oh, and then the spell was cast
And here we are in heaven
for you are mine at last”

2) To Make You Feel My Love – Garth Brooks (or Bob Dylan!)

or

Make You Feel My Love – Adele

I can literally remember the first time I heard this song – the Garth version. I was in high school, sitting on my parents’ bed doing my homework (why I was doing it there I have no idea) and listening to the radio. The song came on, and I dropped what I was doing. I cried, and thought to myself, “this is the most romantic song I have ever heard.” Recently, the incredible Adele, remade the song, which is of course, a more modern version, and great for couples who aren’t so much loving the country music. There is also the original version by Bob Dylan another style.

“When the evening shadows and the stars appear
And there is no one there to dry your tears
I could hold you for a million years
To make you feel my love

I could make you happy, make your dreams come true
There ain’t nothing that I wouldn’t do
Go to the ends of the Earth for you
To make you feel my love, To make you feel my love”

3) Forever – Ben Harper

My sister introduced me to this song around the time of her own wedding. It is a gorgeous song, with meaningful and yet whimsical lyrics that basically blow my mind. I adore it and I think it’s perfect for a wedding.

“Not talkin’ ’bout a year
No not three or four
I don’t want that kind of forever
In my life anymore
Forever always seems
To be around when it begins
But forever never seems
To be around when it ends
So give me your forever
Please your forever
Not a day less will do From you”

4) You Belong To Me – Jason Wade

I fell in love with this song the moment I heard it, which was, of course, when I was watching the movie Shrek. It may have something to do with the fact that Jason Wade (lead singer of Lifehouse) is one of my favorite male vocalists ever – I want to fall asleep inside his voice. Is that weird? Anyway this song is beautiful and the lyrics are so sweet. It was written in the 50′s and there are several versions from that time, by Sue Thompson, Patti Page, Jo Stafford, and others.

“See the pyramids along the Nile
Watch the sunrise on a tropic isle
Just remember darlin’ all the while
You belong to me

Fly the ocean in a silver plane
See the jungle when it’s wet with rain
Just remember ’til you’re home again
You belong to me”

5) God Gave Me You – Dave Barnes (or Blake Shelton)

This is such a beautiful song. If you are a believing couple, the lyrics of this song pretty much say it all. It’s beautiful. I personally prefer the original version by Dave Barnes, but if you love country, the cover by Blake Shelton may be your preference. They are both super sweet.

“On my own I’m only
Half of what I could be
I can’t do without you
We are stitched together
And what love has tethered
I pray we never undo

God gave me you for the ups and downs
God gave me you for the days of doubt
And for when I think I lost my way
There are no words here left to say, it’s true
God gave me you”

Have a wonderful weekend friends!
