Best friends. What would we do without them, right? I certainly don’t know what I would do without mine.
My best friend in the whole wide world lives in New York City, and I am here, in California, and today is her birthday. She has been my best friend for almost 25 years now. (I am 28, for those who don’t know… so that’s the majority of our lives.)
We have seen the best and the worst of each other. Together, we have… played dress up, choreographed dances, acted in plays, had tea parties, gone on adventures, shared secrets, kept secrets, had arguments, survived junior high, nursed broken hearts, lost loved ones, gone to prom, slept under the stars, cheered at football games, learned lessons, tasted freedom, traveled to exotic places (in our imaginations and real life) laughed ’til we cried, talked until there was nothing left to say.
Separately we went off to college, discovered new things, new people, new adventures, and found out who we really were in the process, and continue to learn every day. But always with the other just a phone call away, and linked to one another by a lifetime of memories. It has been 10 years now since we lived in the same town (can you believe that, Lett?) but every time we’re together, it’s as if not a minute has passed since the time before.
She is my sister, my kindred soul, my best friend. And I wish I was with her today. Happy birthday Arletta. I love you.
P.S. This song will always remind me of you.
