Our love story is an unusual one…though we didn’t meet until 2012, our story began in 2006: That was the year Colin deployed to Afghanistan as an Army infantryman, and the year I graduated college and earned my commission as an Air Force officer. Three years later, it was my turn to go to Afghanistan, while Colin was working through PTSD and beginning a writing career. After my deployment, I too suffered mild PTSD symptoms, and found writing, in addition to therapy, helped me process my experiences.
It was military writing that ultimately brought us together. At a writing conference in Chicago, Colin was on a panel discussing working with veterans in the classroom. As a vet and a new student in an MFA program, I was obviously interested. Plus, Colin was cuteI reached out to him via email, and — in the great tradition of writers and military vets everywhere–we met up the first day of the conference for a beer. We swapped war stories and writing manuscripts, and the rest, as they say, is history.
Eighteen months later, Colin and I are both well-published writers and veteran advocates who lecture and give readings across the country. Of course we want to live happily ever after, but we also want to make a difference. Together.
We’re getting married on July 12, 2014 at the Central Library in Seattle; a cocktail party versus a sit-down affair, with passed hors d’oeuvres and “bar bites.” We’re both literature nerds, so the library is a perfect setting. Along the same vein, our theme is “nerd chic.” We’ll be surrounded by books (obviously!), and will have a very casual setting–a dance floor, high top tables, low tables with chairs, and benches and armchairs already in place in the library. And of course, bookshelves galore! The guys will be in tuxes with tweed vests and ties to match Colin’s Scottish tartan (green and blue plaid). My bridesmaids will wear black cocktail dresses (so they can re-wear them later!), with coordinating tartan sashes.
