Guest Post | Preparing For An Engagement Session

Hello everyone! I am excited to have my amazing photographer friend sharing her thoughts with you all today, on how to prepare for an engagement session. With no further ado, welcome Laura (aka Laura Hernandez Photography)!

How exciting!!! You have scheduled your engagement session, then it hits you… What do I do now? What do I wear? What should I bring? Where should we go? Trust me… we’ve all been in that same boat. This is all new to you and there is SO much more to planning a wedding than you ever imagined. I always encourage my clients to put some special thought into their session, but once the day comes, it’s all about being relaxed and having fun. I absolutely LOVE engagement sessions because it gives me time, as a photographer, to really get to know my clients before the big day. That way, when I arrive to your wedding, I’m not just a hired hand, I’m a friend.

Here are some helpful tips to help you be prepared for your engagement session. Nothing mandatory, just helpful suggestions.

I tell my clients to have a total of 3 outfits. It’s best to arrive wearing outfit 1 (unless it will wrinkle), and bring the other 2 to change into. I enjoy helping couples pick out their clothing, so if you’re debating between outfits, let’s chat before the session or bring the extras with you. It’s always better to have more, especially accessories!

My photography focuses on light, so wearing colors that reflect the sun, well, are highly recommended. This means neutral tones, light, or airy colors. Great examples are blush, gold, yellow, and pastels. Black and navy tones absorbs light and can be less flattering.

Below are a few examples of great clothing options:

Props always add a nice element to your portraits. I recommend a small banner (either a simple word such as “Love” or a Save-the-Date), a quilt, or small bouquet of flowers. If you want to go all-out, I love when clients bring vintage furniture such as a chair, bed, or small love seat. These all look amazing in the middle of a field. If you want more of a styled session, I have A LOT of ideas so let’s talk!

SettingI typically shoot in open fields, forests, dirt roads, and natural settings. It’s often described as a rustic style or outdoorsy editorial.

Time I prefer to shoot in the late afternoon until sunset. It’s what you will hear photographers refer to as “The Golden Hour” and it is just magical.

Things that are good to bring that aren’t always thought of is a jacket (evenings can get chilly, especially here near the coast), walking shoes (some of my locations require a little hike to get to and walking in heels isn’t always comfy), bottled water, and makeup for touchups.

The most important thing to remember is relax and have fun. I’m there to guide you through every step so don’t worry about posing, I got your back, and will make sure you look fabulous.
